This blog was written by one of our dealers in Idaho, Tess Hahn, sharing her experience with wildfires and how Drinking Post Waterers helped protect her livestock.

Livestock owners often dream of being able to take time away from chores—maybe to attend an event, visit family, or even go on a vacation. Hawaii, anyone? Drinking Post waterers can make that possible by ensuring your animals always have fresh water.

But sometimes, their value becomes crystal clear in situations you never plan for.

A Wildfire Threat

“Evacuate! Go, immediately. Get out, now!”

Those words were terrifying when you have 60 animals grazing pastures on the side of a mountain. Little Blacktail Mountain was directly in the path of a raging wildfire, driven by 40–50 mph winds.

There was only one road in and out. Our barns were just filled with this year’s hay, tractors, tools, and toys. Smoke filled the air as we made a last look at the home we built with our own hands and left with only the clothes on our backs.

For two weeks, the fire roared through the area, consuming thousands of acres. The road was guarded 24/7 by law enforcement, blocking entry. My mind raced—sheep, horses, neighbor’s steers and hogs, our barn kittens, and our Livestock Guardian dog… could they survive without water?

The open pasture gave them room to run and provided access to some forage, but with temperatures in the high 90’s and aircraft dropping 90–100 loads of retardant on the flames, conditions were rough. Many would have died without water. Drinking Post waterers were there for them when we could not be.

The Outcome

In the end, we were fortunate. A shift in the wind and the tireless work of 700 firefighters saved our home and barns. Bah Bah Blacktail Farm survives and the Drinking Post waterers were key in keeping our livestock safe during those terrifying days.

Reliable water isn’t just a convenience—it’s a lifeline. Whether it’s extreme weather, wildfire, or just needing to step away for a few hours, Drinking Post waterers ensure your animals stay hydrated, safe, and healthy.

Investing in a dependable watering system means peace of mind, knowing that even in the worst-case scenario, your animals’ most critical need—fresh water—is covered.

Thank You, Drinking Post
